Ferrer Welcomes the Ambassador of Benin!
On Thursday, September 18th, Ferrer welcomed a special visitor. His Excellency, Jean Marie Ehouzou, who represents the country of Benin at the United Nations, came to Saint Vincent Ferrer to thank us personally for our Twinning with Sainte Jeanne D’Arc School in Abomey, Benin. Greeting the Ambassador were Sister Christine Cosgrove, O.P., the Project Coordinator, Brother Ralph Montedoro, FSC, a founding member of the Project, Sister Gail Morgan, O.P., Principal of Saint Vincent Ferrer, Mr. Yacoubou Djima, a faculty member of Ferrer and a native of Benin, whose coordination continues to make the Project work, and two student representatives, Jasmine Crowder, a Senior and President of the Ferrer Student Council, and Lorraine McClellan, a Junior and the Vice President of the Student Council. The Ambassador, who most recently served his country as Ambassador to Addis Abbaba, has been stationed in New York City for two years. His Excellency had heard of the Twinning Project between Ferrer and Benin, and he wished to meet our students and thank them for all that they have done. In March of 2007, Ferrer began a Twinning Project with a girls’ secondary school in Benin, named Sainte Jeanne D’Arc. During the visit, a stable water supply was the immediate and pressing need of the school. Last year during Lent, the Ferrer community raised over $10,000 to provide a water tower for Sainte Jeanne D’Arc School. Other generous friends responded generously. With the funds sent to Benin, the school girls will no longer rely on a single bucket of water per day. Even in the dry season, the girls will have an adequate supply of clean water. The next phase of the Twinning is to build a chicken coop which will provide meat and eggs for the girls. This has already been donated through the generosity of friends Jackie, Joe, and Mary Gazella. Eventually, it is hoped that the water pipes may be replaced and electricity run through the school. For now, however, Ferrer is delighted with the presence of Ambassador Ehouzou, and have graciously accepted his thanks for the Twinning. His presence has helped us understand the Global connectedness we have with one another. We look forward to having him return soon.
